Born in the middle of California, Cass McCombs isn’t really from anywhere. He has led as close to a nomadic life as one can these days, moving from city to city, never really letting any roots sink in. The essence of such wayfaring surfaces in his clean, raw folk songs. His music manages to be as simultaneously airy and grounded as a battered flag blowing in the wind on a sturdy old pole. Sometimes the wind picks up a little and McCombs ventures into more rocky territory, cruising over a tight rhythm section with a subtle catchiness. The discography runs deep — five albums and an EP — and 2011’s acclaimed album Wit’s End finds McCombs at his most realized and mature. Delightfully dusty production displays a beautiful selection of Americana. I haven’t seen McCombs since he opened for Band of Horses in a small club in Memphis back in 2007, but one can imagine that his showmanship has only since improved. Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Night at One Eyed Jacks with this gem of an American songwriter.
